Dear Sarah,

You told me the other night that your teacher had a homework assignment for me.  I was to write down five pieces of advice for you as you prepare and get ready to go to college.  I'd be happy to.

Over the years, I've tried to share with you my experiences, my knowledge, and my love.  I expect I've given you many more pieces of advice than you wanted at times, but hopefully some of it has stuck with you.  Anyway, to get to the assignment (and I do it out of love, not because it's been "assigned"), here are five things you should remember when you go off to college next year:

  1. Study hard, work hard, and learn all that you can.
  2. Enjoy yourself!  Have Fun!
  3. Be yourself.  Don't do things just because the "crowd" does.  Trust yourself and make your own decisions.
  4. Don't forget you.  Take time for yourself.  Don't get so wrapped up in classes, studying, and partying that you  forget about you.
  5. Mingle.  You'll meet people from all around the country and the world.  Get to know them and learn about other places and cultures.

College is a wonderful experience, and you have a lot to look forward to.  It's sometimes a little scary prospect as well, but don't worry, that's normal.  Most of the other first year students will be just as nervous as you are.  You're a bright girl, and you'll do just fine.  Have fun, and remember, I'm always there for you.

Love,

Dad
